How to Adjust the Temperature on Your Water Heater

Water heaters keep things steamy, but do they have to be that hot? Let’s talk about how adjusting your water heater temperature can not only help you save energy but also reduce scalding risks and extend the life of your appliance.

Why Lower Your Water Heater’s Temperature?

1. Lower Energy Bills
A standard water heater temp setting is around 140°F, but lowering it to 120°F can save up to 10% on your water heating bill. That’s more than just pocket change over time.

2. Reduced Risk of Scalding
For households with young kids or elderly family members, 140°F is hot enough to cause burns in just a few seconds. Lowering the temp can provide added safety and peace of mind, especially during that early morning wake-up shower!

3. Longer Appliance Life

By easing the temperature strain on your water heater, you reduce sediment buildup and general wear and tear. This can mean fewer costly repairs and a longer life for your water heater.

How to Adjust the Temperature on Your Water Heater

Gas Water Heaters

  1. Locate the Temperature Dial
    Most gas
water heaters have a temperature dial near the bottom of the tank. It could be marked with “Warm,” “Hot,” or exact numbers.
  2. Adjust the Dial
Turn the dial slightly toward the “Warm” setting. Aim for around 120°F. If you’re not sure of the exact temperature, a thermometer at the tap can help measure it.
  3. Check the Temperature
After a couple of hours, turn on a hot water faucet and use a thermometer to test the water. Adjust as needed until it’s at a comfortable, energy-efficient level.

Electric Water Heaters

  1. Turn Off the Power
Safety first! Shut off the power to the heater at the circuit breaker to avoid any risk of electric shock.
  2. Access the Thermostats
Most electric water heaters have two thermostats behind panels on the side of the unit. Use a screwdriver to remove these panels, and gently pull aside any insulation.
  3. Adjust Each Thermostat
Both upper and lower thermostats should be set to the same temperature. Use a flathead screwdriver to adjust them to around 120°F.
  4. Reassemble and Test
Put everything back in place, restore the power, and give it a couple of hours before testing the temperature. Tweak as needed, and you’re good to go!

Keeping It Safe and Efficient

Remember, these adjustments are easy but should be done carefully. For any temperature below 120°F, consult a pro. Lower temps can promote bacteria growth, like Legionella, which you definitely don’t want in your water. Need help or want a professional checkup?
