Now that we have all settled into the time change from last week, let's talk about daylight savings and its possible impact on your plumbing system.
Daylight Savings Time (DST) is a process of adjusting the clocks during summer months to make better use of natural daylight. It was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, although he never actually implemented it. In 1895, George Vernon Hudson proposed an adjusted clock time based on his interests in astronomy and entomology. The idea eventually caught on and was adopted by many countries around the world as a way to save energy while maximizing available daylight hours in the summertime.
The way Daylight Savings works is that clocks are ‘moved forward’ one hour during certain times of the year, usually twice a year (once in spring and once again in autumn/fall). This means one hour less sleep time for most people, but it also means an extra hour of daylight in the evening and can be beneficial for getting outside and enjoying activities during the summer months.
On one hand, the warmer weather prompts us to spend time in our yards and raises water usage for activities like watering the lawn. However, on the other hand...Daylight Saving can have a remarkable effect on plumbing systems. Every time we move our clocks forward or backward, water pressure fluctuates due to the higher demand for water consumption during this twice-yearly event. To help you reduce these expenses while still staying hydrated this spring, here are some helpful tips on how to save water and money:
