Plumbing Tips for the Summer

Summer is a great time to relax and not worry about plumbing problems, right? After all, the pipes can’t freeze and cause a flood, right? Unfortunately, summertime is when our water usage is at its highest level of the year and that makes the hottest months prime time for all kinds of plumbing problems. Here is a quick overview of what to look out for and how to know when it’s time to call a plumber.

Problem: Tree roots

Roots from trees or shrubs can cause a break in the water main. We don’t often think about what may be going on underground because that part of our plumbing network is out of sight. Unfortunately, large tree root are at peak growth during the summer and are strong enough to break through even the sturdiest pipes.

Duncan Plumbing Solution:

If you are experiencing water bubbling up in certain parts of your lawn or if your water pressure is unusually low over several days, it could be a sign of breakage. You might also notice your water bill has gone up or increases for no obvious reason.  In this case, it’s best to call Duncan Plumbing Solutions, your professional plumbers immediately.

Problem: Clogged Toilets

The kids are home from school and that toilet is getting used and flushed all day long. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it gets clogged from time to time.

Duncan Plumbing Solution:

Make sure the kids are informed about what NOT to flush down the toilet. If the clogs are caused by foreign objects being thrown in the toilet or if the system is backed up, it’s wise to call a professional plumber like Duncan Plumbing Solutions.

Problem: Washing Machine Backed Up

Duncan Plumbing Solution:

More outdoor fun means more dirty clothes. Be sure to check your washing machine hoses for bulges, leaks or cracks and be sure to remove drier lint regularly. Also, move your machine at least four inches from the wall to prevent hose kinking and damage, and never leave your home while the washer is running. Remember–washing machine hoses should be replaced approximately every three years. If you are prone to sewer back-ups, you may experience this via the washing machine.  If you find your washing machine is backed up, call Duncan Plumbing Solutions.

Problem: Stinking or Backed Up Garbage Disposal

Duncan Plumbing Solution:

Be careful what you put down your kitchen disposal after your summer cookout. Most are not equipped to handle cornhusks, seeds, celery, banana peels and other fibrous or “stringy” foods. Some other items to stay away from are fats or cooking oils because they form clots in the pipes. Run water at full pressure for 15 seconds before and after you put anything down the disposal to flush it through. If you have a stinking disposal, try baking soda and NEVER put lemon peels or seeds down the disposal.

Problem – High Energy Bills

Duncan Plumbing Solution:

One way to help lower your energy bill by as much as 10% each year is to turn down the temperature of your water heater.

Before problems even begin, have Duncan Plumbing Solutions inspect your sewer line pipes to let you know if you are susceptible to a sewer line backup problem or if damage has already occurred. In either situation, Duncan Plumbing Solutions will be able to help you determine the best treatment option for proper drain cleaning.

Some summer plumbing problems are easily resolved, while others that are a little more serious may require an expert like Duncan Plumbing Solutions so you can enjoy a safe and worry-free summer season. Enjoy the summer!
